Named for its rolling hills, waveland Park contains one of the largest park properties in the city. The neighborhood features stately homes, ample public spaces, easy access to public schools, on of the city's best public golf courses and a funky retail district.
The Waveland Cafe on University Avenue is regularly recognized by readers' polls as one of the best places in Des Moines for breakfast. Next door, the Waveland Tap is a favorite watering hole. Across the strees, the New City Market is one of the city's oldest health-food stores and offers a full range of home-brewing supplies. Carver Ace Hardware, also int he area, is a populat stop for Saturday morning home repairs.
Waveland Park also includes the most patronized branch of the Des Moines Public Library, tennis coursts, the Iowa Jewish Life Center and the Drake Municipal Observatory, as well as churches and businesses. Its biggests claim to fame, however may be Waveland Golf Course. The public links recently installed cart paths and is one of the most challenging courses in the state.
Residents are developing recreation trails through Waveland Park, which will link to other existing and proposed trails in the metro area. Also, the Waveland Neighborhood Association annually sponsors a Jazz in July concert on the grounds of Roosevelt High School. It's one of the best attended events in the series.
