Waterbury is an established an historic Des Moines neighborhood whose chracter, vision and entrepreneurial spirit make it one of the most vribrant in the city. The spirit of the Waterbury neighborhood rests in its people, who select the neighborhood for its beautiful tree canopy, architecture and picturesque setting and are delighted to discover neighbors sharing a passion for tree preservation, family recreation and gardening.
The Waterbury area is home to several architectural styles, including distinctive brick Tudor Revival homes, traditional two-story Colonials and period Arts and Crafts bungalows. The combination of architectural styles and picturesque landscapes provide a unique charm that defines Waterbury.
The neighborhood was developed in three phases from 1906 through 1940. F.C. Waterbury was one of three original developers. Early in its history, the neighbrhood was home to the Ingersoll Amusement Park and Greenwood Park. The amusement park fetured exotic animals, a bandstand and a wooden roller coaster located along Polk Boulevard.
The Waterbury neighborhood has approximately 1,100 households. It was designed to follow the topography of the land. Waterbury Road and Country Club Boulevard, which meander through heavily wooded areas, are examples of this scenic approach.
