Greenwood Historic neighborhood residents tout their community as the most unusual neighborhood in the city. With a pond, railroad tracks and stables, they say Greenwood offers rural living in an urban setting.
Populated by people ranging from reitrees at Wesley Acres to students attending Des Moines University, the neighborhood caters to a variety of interests. Close to downtown and minutes from the airport, Greenwood is located just north of Water Works Park, which contains more than 1, 200 acres, making it one of the largest urban parks in Polk County. The area also features blocks of 100-yaer-old oak trees, hilly terrain and spectacular views of the Raccoon River flood plain and downtown Des Moines, making it one of the city's most picturesque neighborhoods.
Historic houses, dating from between the late 1800's and mid- 1900's, are the heart and soul of Greenwood. Residents take pride in their landscaping and grand oak trees. New curbs and sidewalks and the recently renovated greenwood Elementary School give a new face to the area.
The Greenwood Historic Neighborhood Association has developed a plan to reforest the area and develop bike paths through the neighborhood and into Water Works Park.
