Though one of the smallest neighborhoods in Des Moines, with only 90 single-family homes located in a quiet area on Des Moines' South Side, Somerset has a very active neighborhood association that works to instill pride and cooperation among its residents.
Established in 1994, the neighborhood is located next to several big-city attractions, including Southridge Mall, Blank Park Zoo, Fort Des Moines Park, the Southside YMCA and A.H. Blank Golf Course.
Somerset recently recived a top ranking as one of Des Moines' most stable neighborhoods, according to the city's Neighborhood Revitalization Program. Somerset tied for a second-place ranking, along with Waterbury and Lower Beaver, based on comparisons with more than 40 other city neighborhoods on factors such as property values per square foot, condition of homes, nuisance concerns and the number of homestead owners.
The Someret Neighborhood Association actively works within the community to make a difference. Neighborhood volunteers conducted a tree planting event on Earth Day, sponsored a number of flags at the temporary Healing Field of Central Iowa memorial, and donated gifts to a needy South Side family during the Christmas season.
