One of Des Moines' first suburbs, Highland Park was created as the result of a real estate promotion and development of a streetcar line. The neighborhood occupies the second-highest plateau in Greater Des Moines. Only the state Capital grounds are higher.
The neighborhood has always played host toa strong contingent of locally owned and operated businesses. The neighborhood hosts a variety of events.
