Built as a gated "auto-mobile suburb community" in the 1920's, Chautauqua Park became Des Moines' first integrated neighborhood in the years following World War I. Pillars at the 13th Street and Chautauqua Parkway are all that remain of the gates, but streets are all that remain of the gates, but streets lined with brick homes under a canopy of oak trees account for the neighborhood's curb appeal.
Chautauqua Park's 118 homes feature attached garages located under homes, as well as ornate doors that are either arched, gabled or squared. A gazebo at Chatuauqua and Stephenson Way is the center of neighborhood activties, and Sprink Creek Ravine is a haven for birds and wildlife.
